September 11, 2026

The 25th anniversary of September 11 in 2026 will be recognized through national ceremonies, educational initiatives, public art tributes such as the Tribute in Light, and special events organized by the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, Disney/ABC, the NFL, universities, and local communities.

At the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, a commemoration ceremony will take place on September 11, 2026. Families will read aloud the names of the 2,983 victims from the 2001 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The ceremony includes seven moments of silence, which mark key times on the day of the attacks.

The Tribute in Light installation will project twin beams four miles into the sky and be visible within a 60-mile radius. For the first time, the installation will be broadcast nationwide in partnership with Disney/ABC.

A new exhibition, titled “In Their Honor,” will open on September 12, 2026. This exhibit highlights 25 years of service inspired by September 11, featuring artifacts and personal accounts.

An Anniversary Digital Learning Experience will also be launched. This program consists of a 35-minute educational film and interactive activities designed for the 100 million Americans who are too young to remember the events of September 11.

Community observances include a Memorial Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, concerts by the New York Philharmonic, and interfaith services.

National media and broadcast tributes are planned. Disney/ABC will air a prime-time special, "9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan," at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on September 11. The event will be hosted by David Muir, Robin Roberts, and Diane Sawyer, with performances by Lainey Wilson and John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting.

During Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, league-wide tributes will honor victims, survivors, first responders, and military families. Commissioner Roger Goodell has emphasized the importance of national unity and resilience in these ceremonies.

Universities and local communities are also organizing events. At the University of Connecticut, a remembrance ceremony will be held at noon on September 11, with participation from police, fire, and ROTC members. The university will host a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb with 2,200 steps, ring carillon bells at 8:46 a.m., and display 3,000 flags to honor lives lost.

Journalists and community members will share personal reflections and media stories, describing how September 11 shaped individual lives and careers.

Public participation initiatives encourage collective remembrance. The "Remember the Sky" campaign invites people worldwide to photograph the sky on September 11 and share memories using hashtags #neverforget911 and #rememberthesky. Additionally, a Digital Remembrance Wall enables visitors to leave tributes and messages, honoring victims and educating future generations.
