CFC day on the river

As part of a mandatory recertification process, 12 members of the Cheltenham Fire Company took to the Delaware River in New Hope to complete the fast moving water portion. Practical drills included self-rescue swimming and various ways we either "reach, throw or go" to save victims.

Residents in our fire district recognize that the amount of flooding that occurs along Tookany Creek Parkway has increased exponentially in recent years. This has forced us to train and become proficient in various ways to deal with Water Rescue situations. A particularly hazardous and challenging area is right at Central Ave & Tookany Creek Parkway, where there are several hazards to victims and rescuers. Flood Gates have cut down the number of water rescue calls in certain areas, but this large intersection with 2 bridges remains a constant issue and danger during floods.

We recently made a decision to retire "Marine4", our boat that was mounted on top of the Special Service truck. This is because after all of our training, we recognized that the water just moves too fast along Tookany Creek Parkway to utilize it safely. The men and women of the Cheltenham Fire Company remain committed to water rescue and will continue to train in ways that best accomplish our mission.

A big thanks to Joe Dishler, who is a long-time member of Ogontz Fire Company and a FEMA employee, along with a representative of the Gladwyne Fire Company employed by PA Fish & Boat Commission, for facilitating a successful and educational day on the river.
